Echoes of Cucuteni: Ancient Marks of Identity and Artistry
Inspired by the intricate ceramic figures of the Cucuteni civilization, this piece features engraved lines that reflect symbols believed to represent tattoos or markers of identity. Through this work, I explore the connection between the human form and artistry, inviting viewers to appreciate the rich history and cultural significance embedded in these ancient expressions.

This clay-fired figure was inspired by a figurine from Drăgușeni, Romania, created by the Cucuteni-Trypillian culture, which flourished across what is now Bulgaria, Romania, and Moldova during the transitional period between the Neolithic and Bronze Age, around 4050-3900 BC. This handmade Cucuteni Venus is decorated with white engobe to resemble the original.

This sculpture is inspired by the enigmatic art of the Cucuteni culture, which flourished from 4800 to 3000 B.C. in what is now Romania and Ukraine. Drawing on the striking imagery of ceramic figures found in this region—often adorned with intricate, incised patterns—this piece echoes an ancient practice of using the human form as a canvas for storytelling. The engraved lines are a nod to the Cucuteni’s mysterious symbols, which some believe represent tattoos, clothing, or other markers of identity, a form of personal or communal expression that remains open to interpretation. The connection between these lines and Neolithic ceramics reflects a fascinating moment in human history when decorating pottery may have inspired people to consider marking their own bodies. Through this sculpture, I explore that bridge between object and body, inviting viewers to connect with the artistry and layered meanings within ancient European traditions
